The world of private aviation is built around four broad aircraft categories: light, midsize, heavy and ultra-long-range. Choosing wrong means either overpaying or arriving exhausted.

Light jets — best for short hops

Light jets seat 4–7 passengers, range ~2,000–3,000 km. From HKG: Taipei, Manila, Bangkok, southern China. Typical aircraft: Citation CJ4, Phenom 300, Learjet 75. Hourly rate: USD 3,500–5,000.

Midsize jets — the Asia workhorse

Seat 6–9, range 4,000–5,500 km, stand-up cabin with full galley. From HKG: Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, Mumbai non-stop. Sweet spot for 90% of intra-Asian business travel. Typical aircraft: Citation Latitude, Hawker 900XP, Praetor 600. Hourly rate: USD 5,500–8,000.

Heavy jets — long range with comfort

Seat 10–14, range 6,500–7,500 km, full stand-up cabin. From HKG: Dubai, Sydney, Auckland, most of Europe with one stop. Typical aircraft: Falcon 2000LXS, Challenger 605, Gulfstream G280. Hourly rate: USD 9,000–12,000.

Ultra-long-range — non-stop to Europe and the Americas

Seat 12–18, range 12,000+ km. Only jets capable of HKG–London or HKG–New York non-stop. Typical aircraft: Gulfstream G650/G700, Bombardier Global 7500. Hourly rate: USD 13,000–18,000.

How to choose

  • How far? Match range to route.
  • How many people? Don't pay for empty seats.
  • How long is the flight? Anything over 4 hours, you want a stand-up cabin.
